We Need 1.7 Earths To Survive...

We Need 1.7 Earths To Survive...

Sounds pretty scary, right? Scary, but true. At the current consumption rate on Earth, humans are depleting resources way faster than they are renewed, and according to The Global Footprint Network (GFN) we will need 1.7 Earths to survive.

But how does the GFN calculate this? Simply put, a country can either have an ecological deficit or ecological reserve resulting in an overall total from the 196 countries in the world. Human consumption is measured by the country’s capacity to renew the resources demanded from its ecosystems.

To give you an idea of what that looks like in the U.S. and Canada, see below:

    Ecological Footprint Eve Cork

So which countries are in the ecological deficit dog house? Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, Belgium, Israel, South Korea, United States, Netherlands, and Japan to name a few. One of the common denominators resulting in these negative ecosystems is oil and natural gas.

On the plus side, there are many countries with very large ecological reserves although rapid population growth and deforestation is a growing concern.

    Sustainability Eve Cork

One of the fastest ways for a country to decrease their ecological footprint is by switching to greener energy sources like solar and wind. Many countries, like the United States and Canada are increasing their solar and wind power by subsidizing the resources to the public. This in theory should convert many grids into low consumption ecosystems.

If you’d like to learn more about how solar power and wind mills are decreasing our ecological footprint, please check out Clear Line for more.

Make A Difference This Earth Day 🌎

Make A Difference This Earth Day 🌎

It’s kind of sad that we only set aside one day a year to appreciate this amazingly beautiful planet we live on. Does that mean 364 days of the year we aren’t appreciating the Earth? No, but the best way to change our habits is by action.

    via GIPHY

Hopefully, the following actions will inspire you to change your consumption habits, even if it is just for one day. After all, there is only one Earth.

    Unplug

Turn off the lights in unoccupied rooms and unplug all appliances and tools when not in use. Sounds like common sense right? Right.

      Drive less, carpool more

This one is easy. Walk or ride your bike to work, carpool with a colleague or friend, or take public transit. You can do it... James Corden does!

      Lower your thermostat

Lowering your thermostat by as little as 2 degrees can make a huge difference not only on your monthly bill but also on the overall grid. If you want to be an all-star, lowering your thermostat during low consumption hours (such as when you are away or sleeping) can make a massive difference!

      Wash your dishes by hand

This may be the hardest action to willingly do, but get those hands wet and clean the dishes by hand! Though a lot of dishwashers are eco-friendly and minimize water consumption, nothing can beat washing them manually. It can be really relaxing too (for some people...).

Change your light bulbs to LED’s

Bring grocery bags to the store

Using your own bags at the grocery store means there is less of a chance the plastic bags will end up in a landfill - or even worse, the ocean. This bag from PETA is only $2.50 👇.

      Buy reusable bottled water

This may sound like a broken record, but there are a ton of reusable water bottle companies out there to prevent the consumption of plastic bottles. Here are a few to consider:

      - S'Well Bottle - $25 to $45
      - Klean Kantine - $20 to $70
      - Brita - $20 to $30
      - Platypus - $10 to $15
      - Nalgene - $5 to $30

        Donate, Don't Dump

Donate unwanted clothing, furniture, and additional items instead of contributing to a landfill!

        Buy Sustainable Products

Our consumption habits as consumers are unbelievably bad, but you can make a small difference by knowing where the things you buy are from and how they are made. At Eve, we strive to be the most sustainable as possible, from our material to everything being ethically handmade. You can learn more here. Save 15% with promo code

The "Cork Shortage" Myth - Debunked

The "Cork Shortage" Myth - Debunked

Cork is at the top of the list among cruelty-free, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials. However, if you’re a wine drinker, you’ve more than likely heard the rumor that the world is supposedly running out of cork!

So what’s all the fuss about?

Fortunately, we won’t have to wine about a cork shortage. Contrary to popular belief, there’s more than enough cork available to cap all the wine in the world for another 100 years. However, this rumor will continue to spread as more and more companies within the wine industry switch from authentic cork stoppers to synthetic screw caps.

        Why are they doing this?

It’s simple: synthetic screw caps provide a cheaper, more consistent alternative to seal your favorite bottle of fermented goodness.

The decreasing demand from the wine industry is actually creating an abundant supply of cork. However, you may not know about its other uses, including for cork fabric, which is often referred to as “nature’s leather.”

This fabric has many applications including cork flooring, upholstery, and fashion accessories.

This is where Eve Cork comes in.

Our entire lineup is ethically handmade in Portugal and PETA-Approved Vegan. The premium cork fabric allows the products to be ultra-lightweight and durable while maintaining a leather-like texture (as well as waterproof, easy to clean, and antibacterial).

15 Celebs You Didn't Know Were Vegan

        1. Ellie Goulding
        Ellie Goulding Vegan

The extremely talented British singer-songwriter admits being vegan is a challenge, but that doesn’t stop her from hitting her nutrition goals.

“I call myself an aspiring vegan. It’s challenging, but not impossible. You just have to eat or drink a lot of greens. I make green juice for myself almost every day. I put in things like bananas, avocado, spinach, broccoli—whatever’s in my fridge, really. Sweet-potato fries and salad is my absolute favorite thing. It’s the perfect meal. I eat a lot of quinoa and nuts too, but I also love eating chips. It’s actually easy to be a bad vegan because a lot of junk foods are vegan!” ~Ellie Golding

        2. Miley Cyrus

        Miley Cyrus Vegan

Miley is undoubtedly one of the most well-known vegans in the music industry, and her transition into veganism started at an early age.

“The reason that I started this was because I had a fish that was highly intelligent. He really knew who I was, he really got excited when I was home. One day I went to a sushi restaurant with a few of my friends and they were serving blowfish. And I thought, this is an intelligent animal.” ~Miley Cyrus

        3. Ariana Grande

        Ariana Grande Vegan

In November of 2013, Ariana decided to entirely change her diet to vegan with health and happiness being her biggest motivators.

“I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person. It is tricky dining out, but I just stick to what I know — veggies, fruit and salad — then when I get home I'll have something else.” ~Ariana Grande

        4. Joaquin Phoenix

        Joaquin Phoenix Vegan

Joaquin was a large influence on Ellen DeGeneres’s decision to go vegan, with his extremely powerful narration of Earthlings the documentary.

“I’ve been a vegan since I was about 3 years old and involved in animal rights for years. I’ve seen a number of animal rights films throughout the years, none has affected me as profoundly as Earthlings.” ~Joaquin Phoenix

        5. Natalie Portman

        Natalie Portman Vegan

Once a vegetarian for 20 years, Natalie transitioned into eating 100% vegan in 2009 after she read Jonathan Safran’s Eating Animals, and now refers to herself as a vegan activist.

“Everyone has to find what is right for them, and it is different for everyone. Eating for me is how you proclaim your beliefs three times a day. That is why all religions have rules about eating. Three times a day, I remind myself that I value life and do not want to cause pain to or kill other living beings. That is why I eat the way I do.” ~Natalie Portman

        6. Liam Hemsworth

        Liam Hemsworth Vegan

Some might say it was Miley Cyrus’s influence on Liam fully committing to veganism, but he himself claims otherwise.

"I have a lot of friends who are vegan. Woody Harrelson was actually one of the original reasons I became vegan, because he’s been vegan for, I don’t know, 30 years or something.” ~Liam Hemsworth

        7. Ellen Page

        Ellen Page Vegan

Stemming from her core belief in social justice, Ellen has a very strong emotional tie to veganism and is pretty outspoken about it.

        Alicia Silverstone Vegan

        12.  Casey Affleck

        Casey Affleck Vegan

An avid animal rights advocate, Casey urges his fans to avoid meat, calling it “poison” not only because it is the product of animal cruelty, but also because it is a health nightmare.

“Imagine living in a cage in the dark, unable to move, day after day. The suffering of today’s American farm animals is almost beyond belief. They don't have a choice, but you do, and their lives depend on it.” ~Casey Affleck

        13. Sia

        Sia Vegan
